PNC – Slow Motion ft Jordache and Homebrew

Produced this song for PNC‘s album ‘Man On Wire’ which you can pick up here or if you like you can just get this single for less than $2. It features myself and Tom from Homebrew. We also helped direct the video with the bro Askew, thanks for helping on this one bro! and everyone else that helped get this done on a next to nothing budget. Big Boi is coming to Auckland later in the year, I wonder what he’d think of it.

Gave  a rough version of this beat to David last year, just the sample, drums, bass and some one finger piano shit that we had made up for the hook. Dave put down two verses and a hook, the demo was done, then we added it to the rest of the demos we had been recording for The Rose Tint. Not long after Dave asked us if we could get Freddie Gibbs on any of the songs/demos we’d recorded what would it be, we instantly said this one because we thought it would suit his style perfectly. Not long after that Dave sends us back a demo of Freddie rapping on our unmixed unpolished beat haha, but it was mean, Freddie killed it.

Then we went to work on it, we wanted to give it a live feel, something like Organized Noize would have done in the 90′s. So we got our bro Toma to come play the piano that you hear on the hook and the outro. He’s  the man on the keys. We also wanted some wah guitar work on it and Dave hooked us up with Jeremy Toy from the Opensouls. We just sent him the mp3 of the demo so he could get a feel for the song, and an instrumental to jam to. He sent us back wavs of him jamming to it, it was mean, then we chopped up the parts we liked and put them in the song. We then got mixing engineer and all round good cunt Evan Short to jump on the bass guitar to give it some more groove. We added the synth lead last to give it some Summer Madness and the beat was done.

Moral of the story is – working with good musicians rules.

A while ago now after the release of Something Awesome, Dave had come round to listen to beats for his next project (which would become The Rose Tint), we gave him a bunch on a flash drive, included on that drive was a R@@@ song we had chopped, looped and sequenced to fit some raps. The first demo Dave sent  us back was this, instead of rapping on some of our “actual” beats haha shot Dave. I saw Ratatat live in Auckland in 2008 or 2009, can’t remember, suffice to say they were mean. “I been rapping for about 17 years ok… I don’t write my stuff anymore I just kick it from my head, you know’m sayin’ I can do that.”

The Rose Tint is coming out next month.
